Akhaya Women is a local initiative, led by and for women. They provide the tools and support necessary for women in Myanmar to challenge gender stereotypes. These are values very much supported by Mia Ruby, which is a women led and operated local business. So I was really excited when I learnt that Akhaya Women were starting a new initiative, She Smith, to teach Myanmar women to become silver (and eventually gold) smiths. This is a trade that has traditionally only ever been undertaken by men in Myanmar. I am also excited to announce that we are now also selling Akhaya Women’s own sterling silver line called 925. These beautiful sterling silver earrings are both elegant and fun.
At Mia Ruby we are always looking for ways to reflect Myanmar’s culture and heritage in our designs. One time recently in Yangon's famous Bogyoke Market I was admiring a particularly fine silk achiek longi when it occurred to me that it might be possible to reflect this beautiful pattern in our jewellery. And that is how the Mia Ruby ‘Mandalay’ collection was born.
Purchasing a Burmese ruby is high on the to do list of many visitors to Myanmar. And rightly so considering that Myanmar’s Mogok valley is home to the highest quality, and most sought after, rubies in the world. Yet buying a ruby in Myanmar is not necessarily an easy task due to frequent confusion with sapphire and spinel.
